I remember my heart stopping the first time I saw the trailer for Batman.
It was 1989 and I had to wait months and months and months before it came to the Capital Theatre in my tiny little hometown on the East Coast.
My then boyfriend had orders to take me to it on opening night.
I am a lifelong Batman fan, a one-time owner of the Mego Batmobile and the Dynamic Duo dolls, Batman and Robin. Maybe they’re somewhere stashed in my mom’s attic. They’re likely worthless now, after all the playtime and car crashes with my brother’s Spideymobile.
Nothing has changed since 1989. Every time I see a trailer announcing another instalment in any Batman series, whether Tim Burton’s or Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight, my heart stops and then goes all aflutter.
The Dark Knight Rises opens in Canada Friday, July 20, the third release of superhero blockbusters for Summer 2012. In the conclusion to Nolan’s epic series, Batman is now the enemy to Gotham City yet he defends his city against the villain Bane.
Check out the trailer:
Don’t hold it against me, but Michael Keaton is my favourite Batman of all time with Christian Bale a close second. Adam West doesn’t count in the order. He’s incomparable. He’s the original, untouchable.
And they all have such wonderful toys.
We’ve watched the evolution of the Batman costume come from Adam West’s fabric tights to a flat-out sexy batsuit of latex magnificence.
CostumeChik, Canada’s online source for costume shopping, has a variety of batsuits available for your next superhero party.
West wore grey and black, sometimes blue, with a brilliant yellow utility belt.
Burton’s Batman — whether it was Keaton, George Clooney or Val Kilmer — wore a muscular batsuit with the yellow bat signal and Nolan’s Caped Crusader takes it one step further. The Dark Knight is a melancholy figure in all black, blending in with the night that cloaks his identity.
We have a deluxe version of the Dark Knight’s costume, perfect for premiere night or parties where you want to stand out.
